| The enzymatic reduction of ketones requires an expensive cofactor (NADPH or NADH). Kaneka developed a scalable and cost-effective "Enzymatic Reduction System," in which two enzymes, enantio-selective reductases and cofactor regeneration enzymes are over-expressed in a single E. coli cell using recombinant DNA techniques. The substrate concentration, reaction yield, and optical purity produced by this system are far higher than those produced by any asymmetric hydrogenations currently available. The system can be applied towards various substrates by replacing recombinant enzymes depending on substrate specificity. Kaneka is manufacturing a variety of chiral alcohols on a large MTs scale utilizing our "Enzymatic Reduction System." |
